Visited (self-confirmed) June 2026

As part of a half-day excursion from Vilnius, I visited Trakai, one of Lithuania’s most iconic destinations. Located amidst a landscape of lakes and forests, the town is best known for its picturesque island castle, which appears almost like a fairytale fortress rising directly from the water.
The visit began with a walk through the small town and along the lakeshore, offering pleasant views across the water toward the castle. Although my free time was limited, I crossed the wooden bridge to the island, briefly explored the castle grounds, and walked around the exterior to appreciate its distinctive red-brick architecture from different angles.
A particular highlight was a boat cruise on Lake Galvė, which provided panoramic views of the castle, surrounding islands, and shoreline. Seeing the fortress from the water gave a much better impression of its strategic and scenic location than the visit on land alone.
The excursion concluded with lunch featuring traditional local cuisine before returning to Vilnius.
While Trakai can be visited in just a few hours, the combination of lakeside scenery, historic architecture, and a relaxed small-town atmosphere makes it a worthwhile excursion from the Lithuanian capital.
