Starting the day from Cefalù, I headed to Milazzo with an initial plan to take a boat to the Aeolian Islands. Due to strong winds, most ferries were canceled—so I took the chance to explore the area instead.
Milazzo turned out to be nicer than expected. I spent the morning at the impressive Castello di Milazzo, a vast fortified complex with panoramic views, several small museums, and layers of architectural history. I then drove out to Capo di Milazzo for a coastal walk from the Santuario Rupestre di Sant’Antonio da Padova to the lighthouse and Piscina di Venere, with clear views toward the Aeolian Islands on the horizon.
The next day, I continued to Messina, starting at Torre Faro, where I took a short walk of the area around the Pilone di Torre Faro and caught a glimpse of a local festival being set up. In the city center, I arrived just in time for the midday mechanical bell tower show at the Cathedral of Messina, followed by a climb up the campanile and a visit to Santuario di Montalto and the Sacrario di Cristo Re, both offering sweeping views over the Strait of Messina. I also passed by Teatro Vittorio Emanuele and Palazzo del Governo. Unfortunately, the tram service to extend the sightseeing tour was not running that day.
Later in the afternoon, I made a final detour into the Fiumedinisi Nature Reserve for a scenic hike toward Monte Scuderi. Though time ran out before reaching the summit, the peaceful trail and views made for a rewarding end to the day.
