I visited the Valley of the Temples in a late September afternoon, entering from the Eastern gate and walking the full length of the archaeological park toward the Western zone. This route allows you to explore the site in historical and visual order, with the afternoon sun casting a warm glow on the ancient ruins.

Along the way, I passed by and explored the key sights, including:

  • The Temple of Hera (Juno), perched on a hilltop with panoramic views
  • The remarkably preserved Temple of Concordia, one of the finest examples of Doric architecture still standing
  • The Temple of Heracles, with its remaining columns showcasing the scale of the original structure
  • The remains of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, once among the largest temples in the Greek world
  • The Temple of Castor and Pollux, now a symbolic icon of Agrigento despite only four columns remaining
  • Several ancient necropolises and Byzantine tombs, as well as fragments of city walls, gates, and early Christian sites

I also visited the Giardino della Kolymbetra, a lush historic garden nestled between the temples, offering a tranquil contrast to the surrounding ruins and a peek into ancient agricultural practices.

After exiting on the Western side, I made the long walk up to Agrigento’s old town. Although the route wasn’t particularly scenic and quite steep in some parts, I still managed to see the Cathedral of San Gerlando and stroll Via Atenea in the evening hours.

Overall, the Valley of the Temples is an extraordinary place to experience the grandeur of ancient Akragas, with layers of history etched into every stone and column.
