The Škocjan Caves are among Slovenia's most spectacular natural attractions and, in my opinion, even more impressive than the country's better-known Postojna Cave. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cave system is famous for its enormous underground canyon, through which the Reka River disappears beneath the Karst plateau.

Access is only possible as part of a guided tour, which follows a carefully designed route through a succession of vast chambers, dramatic rock formations and narrow passages. Photography is not permitted inside, but this also encourages visitors to simply experience the cave itself rather than viewing it through a camera. The constantly changing scenery and the scale of the underground spaces make the tour one of the highlights of any visit to Slovenia.

The defining moment is crossing the suspended walkway high above the roaring underground river. Looking down into the immense canyon while surrounded by towering cave walls creates a unique sense of scale that sets Škocjan apart from most other show caves. Throughout the tour, the guides explain both the geological processes that formed the cave system and its importance for scientific research and conservation.

Before entering the caves, I visited two viewpoints overlooking the collapse dolines, providing a first impression of the extraordinary landscape hidden beneath the surface. After the guided tour, I chose the longest return route to the visitor centre, which winds through additional cave sections, forests and scenic viewpoints, making the overall experience considerably more varied than simply returning directly.

In the afternoon I crossed the nearby border into Trieste, Italy's elegant Adriatic port city. Although I only had around three hours available, it was enough to explore many of the city's main sights, including the impressive Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia, the waterfront at Molo Audace, the Canal Grande with its characteristic churches, the historic Roman Theatre, the hilltop Castello di San Giusto, and the city's remarkable synagogue.

Overall, Škocjan Caves stand out as one of the most memorable natural attractions in the region. The combination of enormous underground spaces, the spectacular river canyon and the beautifully designed walking route creates an experience unlike any other cave I have visited.
