Having been there several times on business trips many years ago, I never found the time to really experience the city and therefore spent two days exploring Cologne on a holiday weekend. In hot and sunny weather, I combined the city's famous historic landmarks with its strong museum scene and lively modern neighborhoods. Arriving at Köln Messe/Deutz station on a Saturday morning, I immediately started exploring the Rhine promenade around the iconic Hohenzollern Bridge, offering classic views toward the cathedral skyline, before crossing the bridge on foot.
The obvious centerpiece of Cologne is the monumental Kölner Dom, which I explored extensively, including the treasury museum and the climb up the tower with panoramic views over the Rhine and the city. Despite the crowds, the cathedral remains genuinely impressive both inside and outside.
From there I continued into Cologne's museum district. The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum provided an excellent overview of medieval, Renaissance, and impressionist art, while later visits to the Museum Ludwig, the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, the Museum Schnütgen, the Kölnisches Stadtmuseum, and the Museum für Angewandte Kunst showcased everything from contemporary art to ethnology and medieval religious artifacts. The city's museum landscape turned out to be far more diverse than expected.
Beyond the museums, much of the appeal came from simply walking through different parts of the city. I explored the old town around Heumarkt, Alter Markt, Groß St. Martin, and the fish market area, before continuing south to the modern Rheinauhafen with its striking crane houses along the waterfront.
The second evening was dedicated to the more contemporary side of Cologne. Walking through the Belgisches Viertel revealed a lively atmosphere with cafés, bars, and independent shops, while Ehrenfeld offered a completely different vibe with street art, multicultural influences, and a more alternative urban character.
Naturally, the trip also included dinner at a traditional Brauhaus, completing the typical Cologne experience with local food and Kölsch beer.
Overall, Cologne surprised me positively with its combination of world-class landmarks, excellent museums, relaxed Rhine atmosphere, and varied neighborhoods.
