Banteay Srei, often referred to as the 'Citadel of Women,' is a 10th-century temple located in Cambodia. It is renowned for its intricate stone carvings, considered by many to be some of the finest in the world. Located about 25 kilometers northeast of the main Angkor complex, Banteay Srei stands out for its unique pink sandstone construction and detailed decorative wall carvings, which differ from other Angkorian sites.

Historically, Banteay Srei was a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva. Its construction began in 967 AD by a Brahman named Yajnavaraha, a counselor to the king. This temple holds historical significance as it provides insight into the art and religious practices of the Khmer Empire during its peak. Despite its smaller scale compared to other temples in the region, its exquisite craftsmanship and preservation make it culturally significant.

One notable landmark within Banteay Srei is the central sanctuary, surrounded by a moat, and its famed pediments and lintels that display epic Hindu stories, including tales from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The temple's architecture is considered a classic example of Khmer masonry, with a focus on clarity and detail.

Geographically, Banteay Srei is situated in the Siem Reap Province of Cambodia, within a region characterized by a tropical climate. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from November to February, when the weather is cooler and less humid.

While Banteay Srei itself does not host specific festivals, it is part of the greater Angkor Archaeological Park, which is a focal point for cultural festivities such as the Khmer New Year and the Angkor Festival, celebrating Cambodian heritage and history.
