Guatapé Rock, also known as El Peñol de Guatapé, is a massive rock monolith located in Colombia, recognized for its awe-inspiring presence and unique geological features. Towering approximately 2,135 meters above sea level, this granite wonder stands around 200 meters above the surrounding landscape. The rock is situated in Antioquia department, near the town of Guatapé, about two hours' drive from Medellín. The region boasts a temperate climate with an average temperature of 18°C (64°F), making it an ideal destination year-round.

Historically, Guatapé Rock has been a sacred site for the indigenous Tahamí people. It is said that they worshipped the monolith for its mystical aura and natural beauty. In the contemporary era, El Peñol has become a cultural icon and a popular attraction, drawing thousands of visitors who come to marvel at its sheer size and panoramic views. The rock is equipped with a staircase of 740 steps, blending seamlessly into a narrow cleft, which guides visitors to the summit for breathtaking vistas of the surrounding lakes and islands of the Guatapé reservoir.

The area around Guatapé Rock is dotted with vibrant landmarks, including the colorful town of Guatapé itself, known for its zócalos, which are richly decorated baseboards on houses that depict life in the town and historical events. The town celebrates its cultural heritage through various festivals, including the 'Fiesta de los Zócalos,' where these artistic expressions take center stage. The annual “Festival del Rock” in Guatapé also highlights the region's commitment to offering modern cultural experiences alongside its historical roots.

An interesting fact about Guatapé Rock is the presence of a large letter 'G' and an unfinished 'U' painted on its side, remnants of an attempt by the town of Guatapé to claim the rock, which was opposed by neighboring El Peñol. This rivalry adds a layer of cultural narrative and local lore to the rock's history. Furthermore, the reservoir surrounding the rock, created by flooding the Guatapé-El Peñol valley, adds a unique aquatic landscape that is perfect for water sports and recreation.
