Paestum, located in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of Italy, is an archaeological site renowned for its remarkably well-preserved Greek temples. It is a testament to the architectural prowess of the ancient Greeks and stands as a significant cultural and historical landmark of Magna Graecia, the area of southern Italy that was extensively colonized by Greek settlers.

Historically, Paestum was founded by Greek colonists from Sybaris around 600 BC. The city's original name was Poseidon, honoring the Greek god of the sea. It flourished as a vibrant trading and cultural center during its time under the control of the Greeks and later the Romans. It was abandoned during the Middle Ages, which ironically contributed to the preservation of many of its structures.

The cultural prominence of Paestum is highlighted by its three major Doric temples, constructed between 550 and 450 BC. These include the Temple of Hera, the Temple of Athena, and the Temple of Neptune (or Poseidon), with the Temple of Neptune being the largest and best conserved. These temples are regarded as some of the most intact ancient Greek structures globally.

Geographically, Paestum is situated near the Tyrrhenian Sea, along the plain of the Salerno River. This location provided fertile land and easy access to maritime trade routes. The climate is typically Mediterranean, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, which have played a role in the preservation of the site over centuries.

A unique feature of Paestum is its extensive city walls, which extend for nearly five kilometers, surrounding the ruins of the ancient city. Within these walls lie not only the temples but also an amphitheater, ancient street remnants, and various tombs, including the Tomb of the Diver, which features a rare Greek fresco.

Paestum hosts events such as historical reenactments and cultural festivals that bring the past to life. These events provide insight into Greek and Roman traditions and include guided tours, workshops, and performances that attract history enthusiasts from around the world.
